The Rotary Club of Salcombe dates back to 1980. The Charter presentation to the club was at a dinner held at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel in Totnes on the 18th July 1980. 26 members were present. Our Mother club was Kingsbridge and our mentor was a District Council member Neville Jarrett of the Totnes Club and our first President was Terry Andrew, formerly the Manager of The Marine Hotel in Salcombe.

We met first in the Fortescue Inn and were quite informal and passed a resolution that members could wear working clothes because the meetings were in the lunch hour and no one had time to change. The Club has met at a variety of places in Salcombe namely, the Wells Hotel (defunct) the Knowle Hotel (now flats) the Vineyard Hotel (now flats), the Woodgrange Hotel (now flats) the Marine Hotel (now Coast ) and the Salcombe Yacht Club.

Over the years a variety of events have been organised by the Club but the main events inlcude an Old Folks Dinner at Cliff House in the Spring for about 60 pensioners, a Fireworks BBQ or lately a picnic at Cliff House, a holiday for six schoolgirls from the Birmingham area utilising a fund donated by a late member Dion Davis, an annual carol service on Whitestrand around an Christmas tree supplied by the Club and an outing, again for pensioners , to a pantomime. Club Membership fell away to 15 in 2005 but has remained constant over the last few years. Currently the Club meets at The Old Inn at Malborough on a Tuesday at 6.00p.m. The Membership is drawn from a variety of local businesses and there are no restrictions. Three of the original Members remain on the outskirts of the Club and meets, as befits their age and condition, on the first Wednesday of the month and gibber Rotarian with a Devon accent!
